ABOUT THE ESTATE

WHERE NATURE’S MAGIC GROWS

Set amidst the hills of the Southern Uplands of Scotland, some 14 miles from the sea, Craigengillan lies within one of the most beautiful of landscapes and has a fascinating history.

A Bronze Age burial mound and the remains of mediaeval farmsteads and enclosures are witness to people’s ancient presence here.

It was in the late 1700’s however, that much of the man influenced landscape was created. It was then that the earlier part of the mansion house was built, fields enclosed with granite dykes and the first of the stone bridges built spanning the River Doon.

Today the estate comprises 3,000 acres, encompassing a Designed Landscape, woodlands, wetlands, pasture, heath, lochs and two Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI’s), providing a diverse range of natural habitats, within a landform more closely related to the Highlands than to the south west of Scotland.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

  • The restoration and preservation of the main buildings and designed landscape.
  • The long-term viability of the estate and its part in the wider community
  • The welfare of the farmed animals.
  • The conservation and enhancement of habitats and the wild flora and fauna which inhabit them.
  • To act as a catalyst for the economic and environmental regeneration of the Doon Valley and beyond.

Our ambitious aim is to make Craigengillan a living model of environmental excellence within the UNESCO Biosphere and Dark Sky Park.

“… CRAIGENGILLAN CLAD IN SUMMER GREEN ADDS LUSTRE TO THE WILD, ROMANTIC SCENE.”
